Glenrothes Cougars Ice Hockey Club are one of the oldest recreational Ice Hockey Clubs in the country having been formed in 1986 they have continued to exist even though they lost their home rink some 15 years ago. We used to travel to livingston to train and play our games and when that shut down we moved to the Fife Ice Arena which is now our home.
We were formed initially by guys who were a little older and wanted to try playing the game, we then progressed to forming a club and affiliating to the Scottish Ice Hockey Association and started to play some friendlys,(as there was'nt many recreational teams at the time), We had a mixture of players starting to train and join the club ranging from older retired players right through to the complete novice. When they closed down our rink we had to decide wether to move to another rink or fold the club, the decision was made to keep going and find a new rink. We did find a new rink some 40 miles away in livingston this proving we had a dedicated group who just wanted to play hockey....
We got 2 years at livingston before it shut down and then we moved to Fife Ice Arena..
In the 2 years at livingston we delved into the unexpected and decided to host a tournament (Winter Challenge Cup) for recreational teams from all over the uk. This was a great success and included several scottish teams aswell as teams from cleveland, solihull, peterborough,. We then had the dilema of hosting it the following year but with ice time at a premium in fife we had to find another rink ....... Aviemore was to be the new venue
Aviemore....what a venue, what a weekend, and that's where it was held every year until it shut down.. The tournament soon became a favourite in the hockey calendar and has attracted teams from elgin in the north to slough in the south and even delta airlines from America. This has enabled the cougars to forge some good relationships with clubs from all over the uk and allowed us to travel the country for a game / tournament and a good night out thrown in.. We are a well traveled club who will accept invites to play anywhere, this being proved when we traveled to canada to take part in the glengary county championships courtesy of the AJK Highlanders ..
As time moves on players who initially helped form the club start to leave and new guys come in, It is a great credit to all previous players and current players that the club has been around for 20 odd years and still going from strength to strength especially in the current climate where recreational hockey has completely changed and is now more structured and more competitive than it has ever been...
